Games of chance on the internet are becoming more and more popular, according to a report published by Nielsen/NetRatings. Around 14 million Europeans try regularly to change their lives by playing games of chance on the internet.

Virtual games are specially popular in Sweden, France and Great Britain. Almost 30% of British population has played for money on the internet at least once in their lives. In Germany, one out of seven net surfers enters games of chance sites.

Investigation continues, but parlor stays open. Nevada County's poker players can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Their only legal gambling facility, the Gold Rush Casino and Gaming Parlor, can keep its doors open, according to a Thursday afternoon ruling by the California Gambling Control Commission. At least for now.

"If we had our desires, we would close the doors today," said Dean Shelton, chair of the commission

Casinos at Christmas Holidays

Randy Goodwin Jr.'s Christmas morning didn't start with presents beneath the tree, but with a roll of the dice. Goodwin of Wethersfield, whose family is all in Pennsylvania, spent his morning at Mohegan Sun playing craps and looking in the shops.

He said he usually doesn't go home for Christmas because he doesn't want to be trapped anywhere by weather. "I'll call my mother later in the day and just kill time until then," Goodwin said.

Las Vegas Gambling Industry

Neither rain nor regulation appears to be holding back the sprawling gambling industry, casino lobbyist Walton Chalmers told tourism officials in a "state of the industry" address.

The loss of several Gulf Coast casinos to hurricane damage was a tragic setback in a year otherwise marked by huge profits, consolidation and domestic and overseas expansion, said Chalmers, the vice president of the American Gaming Association.

Christmas Shopping Online

High street stores are facing a tough Christmas with more shoppers turning to the internet, a report has said.

A survey of 1,000 people by analysts Mintel suggests almost 40% of British adults will buy some of their gifts online - up from 22% four years ago.

The survey suggests 15% of people now prefer to do their Christmas shopping online - up 5% on last year.

New Online Casinos for 2006

Antigua is seeking some outside help in a dispute with the U.S. over Internet gambling. The Caribbean island is setting up an online gambling industry, over the objections of U.S. officials.

So far, Antigua's finance minister says at least ten new online gaming companies will be open for business next year, joining the 14 that already have operating licenses.

The new online casinos will generate hundreds of jobs and more than two million dollars in gaming licenses fees.
